Digital design
The one-year Higher Certificate in Print Design & Publishing scholarship will be on offer from Friends of Design for those with previously disadvantaged backgrounds and its two-year Digital Design Distinguished Talent Scholarship will be awarded to the individual with the most potential. Submissions for the 2011/2012 bursaries open on 4 October 2010 and close on 14 December.
Eva Csernyanszky, founder of the Cape Town-based school, says a few scholarships will be awarded to deserving first-year students every year. Students at her school are kept at the forefront of new technology through her strong links with the innovative German graphic design industry. While teaching for several years at a leading graphic design academy in Berlin, she made many industry contacts and experienced German digital design artists now regularly visit the academy as guest lecturers.
The school's two-year programme comprises training in all areas of digital design: print, web design, and motion graphics. The focus is primarily on the print medium during the first year, with students developing a solid technical ability in the software programs commonly used in the design industry, including Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Acrobat. In the second year, they experiment with web design, two-dimensional animation and motion graphics and video
"Students also engage, when at all possible, with real clients, as industry-experienced lecturers guide them through live projects, train them to work to realistic deadlines and present their ideas professionally," adds Csernyanszky. "By the time they graduate, they will be confident in their ability to tackle any design challenge in the real world. In addition, they will have a portfolio of conceptually rich, technically sound and well presented work."

In a partnership between SABC Education and NEMISA, R1.5 million is available for students interested in studying animation, graphic design, television and radio production in 2011. To qualify, students need a Matric/Grade 12/NQF level 4 related qualification and must apply before 31 October 2010.
NEMISA started training young people from diverse backgrounds in 2000 on a full-time basis in the areas of TV and radio production, with just under 40 students a year. The students primarily came from disadvantaged backgrounds with emphasis on women who made up at least 60% of the student population. It has grown over the years and now produces more than 870 graduates a year, in television production, radio production, animation and graphic design in programmes accredited by MAPPP SETA. Its graduates hold key positions in big media houses.
